Lan Pham and Axel Wilke today announce their joint election bid for seats at the ECan table. Under the ticket ‘The Common Good’, they will be contesting the Christchurch Central-Ōhoko constituency in the local elections in October as independents.
Lan is an incumbent councillor first elected in 2016 when she gained the third-highest number of votes of any local body candidate in New Zealand (behind Phil Goff and Lianne Dalziel, mayors of Auckland and Christchurch, respectively). In 2017, her Taylor Swift video on clean water went viral, making her widely known. She is excited about teaming up with transport specialist Axel Wilke:
The skill set and values Axel brings will be invaluable in making progress in the transport area of ECan which is by far our biggest area of expenditure and is the area I feel that needs urgent, transformational change led by someone who has specific expertise in this area.
Axel is a transport planner with a national profile for sustainable transport. He has never stood for election before and is motivated to leave private practice and join local government due to a deep concern over the climate crisis we face:
I’m excited about teaming up with Lan, who embodies strong environmental leadership, in what we see as a massive opportunity. The opportunity for transformational change in the face of huge challenges. The opportunity to put the common good first. Where the wellbeing of our people and our planet comes above profiting from pollution.
